Mercer County is named for Hugh Mercer, a doctor in the American Revolutionary War.
The seat and largest city is Aledo. It borders Rock Island, Henry, Knox, Henerson and Warren counties in Illinois, and Des Moines and Louisa counties in Iowa.
Main highways include US-67, IL-17, IL-94 and IL-135.
